Q

Becker - social class inside of school factors (Interactionist)

A

Middle class pupils as closest to the “ideal pupil” in terms of performance, conduct, appearance and attitude.

The levels applied by teachers to pupils shape the nature and quality of the interaction between pupil and teacher. Pupils will react positively or negatively to teacher judgements and have ‘self fulfilling prophecy’. Therefore, working class students may be labelled as non-achievers or deviant which then may lead to their lack of achievement.

Q

Feinstein - social class outside of school factors (Cultural)

A

Class differences existed in terms of support from parents. He measured parent’s interest by asking for teacher’s assessment of how much interest they showed in their children’s education.

This is criticised as a lot of working class parents’ will work more than one job or potentially shift work, meaning attendance at school is not due to a ‘lack of interest’.
