Coalition 2010-2015 - more diversity and choice
Free Schools and Adaption and expansion of Academies
Free Schools - Opened in areas “where they are needed”, offering more choice over types of school children are sent to. Flexibility over curriculum and more parentocracy.
Adaption of academies - ‘Outstanding’ schools could now become Academies rather than failing schools. More choice to parents over where to send children.
Miller - less diversity and choice
(Choice is an illusion)
Schools set entrance criteria therefore no real choice. Choice is an ‘illusion’. Poorer pupils less able to exercise choice as they can’t afford to travel to better schools.
Bourdieu - less diversity and choice
(Class inequality) Cultural, economic and social capital may limit ability to exercise choice. The middle class can 'play the system', whereas the working class can't.
Bryne - less diversity and choice
(Ethnic inequality)
Migrants have less local knowledge and support when making schooling choice for children. They cannot make informed choices over where to send children to school.
