Norms
- derived moral principles, customs & behaviors embedded by international law, upheld by state government & citizens which is based on Charter of UN.
- primary state obligations that look after people.
Geopolitics
- influence of human & physical geography (government activities, law & decision making)
- shows global balance of political power & international relations which relates to uneven world.
- explained by wealth, development & political strength differences that must be considered when intervening.
Nation
- group people with strong bonds identity, united by shared descent, history, traditions, culture & language
- may be confined to one country or across adjoining countries
Nation Building
-how government promotes nationality through education & media
Intervention
-actions international organisations take in resolving conflicts & ease suffering of humanitarian crisis from challenges to sovereignty & territorial integrity (very controversial)
Forms of intervention
- economic sanctions (Article 41) -> commercial or financial penalties against target self-governing state, group or individual
- military intervention (authorized by UN, Article 42) -> protect, defend or rescue people from gross abuse attributable to their own government
- missions of regional organisations (NATO, humanitarian assistance by civil society organisations, NGOs & agencies)
Territory
-area of land controlled & governed by a specific group
Territorial Integrity
- related to sovereignty
- states that it can be exercised in are by law
- prevents nation-states promoting secessionist movements or border changes in other nation-states through use of force
- preservation is important in security.
State
-area of land of an independent country with well-designed boundaries & politically organised body people under a single government
State Apparatus
-set of institutions & organisations
-relates to what state power is achieved ->
maximal state apparatus = high state power
minimal state apparatus = low state power
Globalization
- process of businesses & other organisations developing international influence or start operating at international scale
- is increased by number of TNCs (Trans-National Co operations)
Sovereignty
-absolute authority that states govern itself (land and people in their territory) & has full control over it’s affairs
Separatism
-group seeks degree autonomy or self-determination of another group
Militarization
-process society activity builds up capacity for fighting or conflict
International Community
-people & government of the world
