global atmospheric circulation Flashcards
What is weather?
The day to day condition of the atmosphere
What is climate?
The long term average of weather conditions
What does the general atmospheric circulation model represent?
Shows how wind and air moves around the world. Air circulates in each hemisphere in three cells.
How does the sun affect the wind directions?
The winds are caused by the sun warming air more intensely at the equator and this warm air moves North and South to the Poles.
Name the cells.
Hadley, Ferrell and Polar
What do you get in high pressure zones?
Where you get clear skies and temperatures may be warm or cold. Winds move outwards from high pressure areas.
What do you get in low pressure zones?
Lots of cloud because the warm air rises, cools and condenses. Air rises at the equator and winds blow from high pressure to low pressure areas.
What is the weather in UK?
Cloudy and wet: deciduous forest.
Winds from South West bring warm and wet conditions
Winds from North bring snow and cold winter weather.
What is the weather in Northern Egypt?
Hot and dry: desert
Air is sinking and at high pressure.
Few clouds and little rainfall
What is the weather in Northern Brazil?
Hot and humid: tropical rainforest.. Hot air rises and cools and condenses into cloud and rain: it is cloudy and rainy.
