Earthquakes and Volcanoes Flashcards
What are earthquakes?
The vibrations in the Earth’s crust that create shaking at the surface.
Reasons for Earthquakes happening?
stresses build up between the plates as on plate passes another.
They snag and grind allowing energy to build up.
When plates move again the energy is released as shock or seismic waves through the Earth’s crust.
The focus is the point in where earthquake is occurring.
The point above this on the surface is called the epicentre.
What happens during a volcano?
Landform created by hot liquid rock magma being forced into the Earth’s crust.
What are the two types of volcano?
Composite - destructive PM, Steep sided layers of ash and lava, cools quickly and very explosive.
Shield - dome shape, sloping sides, magma is runny and flows long distances before it cools, gentle explosions.
