Glands Of The Endocrine System Flashcards
- located at the base of the brain. Called the “master gland”.
- connected to the hypothalamus.
- nervous system sends signals via the hypothalamus to exert control over the pituitary.
- comprised of two glands: posterior and anterior.
Pituitary
•located toward front of head.
• makes up largest portion of pituitary.
•produces 6 different hormones.
(HGH,ACTH,PRL,TSH,FSH,LH)
Anterior pituitary
• Produces two different hormones.
Oxytocin and ADH
Posterior pituitary
- located in the throat.
- butterfly shaped
- non-steroid
- produces thyroxin and calcitonin
Thyroid Gland
- found near the thyroid gland( Located on the surface)
* produces PTH
Parathyroid gland
- located near small intestine.
- contains specialized endocrine cells called Islets of Langerhans.
- Islets of Langerhans are made up of both Alpha and Beta cells.
- Secretes insulin and Glucagon.
Pancreas (Islets of Langerhans)
- produces melatonin.
* small coned shaped structure located deep within the brain.
Pineal Gland
- located between the lobes of the lung in the upper chest.
* produces thymosin
Thymus Gland
•located at top of kidneys
• composed of two layers.
Outside= adrenal cortex
Inside = adrenal medulla
Adrenal glands
•releases three major hormones.
Aldosterone, cortisol, sex hormones: androgens and estrogens.
• outside of adrenal gland.
Adrenal cortex
•releases two major hormones.
Adrenaline(epinephrine) and Noradrenalin(norepinephrine)
•inside of adrenal gland.
Adrenal medulla
Ovaries and testes.
Gonads
- found in females
* produces estrogen and progesterone.
Ovaries
- found in males
* produces testosterone
Testes
