Glaciers as a system. Flashcards
Inputs.
Snow and avalanches.
Outputs.
Melting and evaporation, sediment.
Polar glaciers.
Cold-based glaciers and occur near the poles where the temperature is below freezing.
Temperate glaciers.
Warm-based glaciers and include most glaciers outside of Antarctica and northern Greenland ice caps.
Internal flow.
This is movement within the glacier ice because of gravity.
Basal flow/ slippage.
The glacier moving over bedrock creates friction . The lower ice is also under a great deal of pressure results in melting.
Extensional flow.
Occurs when the valley gradient becomes steeper.
Compressional flow.
Occurs when there is a reduction in the gradient of the valley flood leading to ice deceleration and thickening of the ice mass,
Rotational flow.
This occurs within the corrie. Rotational movement.
