Glaciers Flashcards
Glacier defenition
A glacier is a slowly moving, huge mass of ice. It moves under the influence of gravity.
What are the 2v types of glaciers?
Warm-based
Cold-based
What are Warm-based glaciers?
Known as temperate glaciers
Move 2-3m per day, so lots of erosion
Found in lower latitudes, E.G. Alps.
These glaciers mainly move by slippage. (Melt water lubrication).
What are Cold-based glaciers?
Move by internal deformation: When gravity/pressure of ice cause ice crystals to slide over each other in a series of parallel planes, in a crumpling motion.
Frozen to bed, so only move 1-2cm per day, so little erosion
Also known as polar glaciers, found in higher latitudes.
What are glaciated landscapes?
Parts of the surface that have been shaped by glacial action.
Fact
Glaciers form where the climate is cold from latitude or altitude.
What is latitude?
Distance north or south of the equator
What is altitude
Height above sea level
