Drumlins Flashcards
Clues in the formation of a drumlin
Shape of hill - upstream side (Stoss end), is steep. And downstream side (Lee side), is not steep
Shape of valley - U-shaped
Made of glacial till
Striations - rocks scratching against each other.
(Long) Formation of a drumlin
Glaciers flow over the top of glacial till. Glacial till is made up from a chaotic jumble of material eroded by a glacier. Glacial till is often saturated and can be moulded. As the glacier flows down a valley, it may come into contact with a stiffer, stickier, heavier, piece of sediment on the valley floor. When this happens, the sediment bunches up as the ice flows over the top of it. This creates a steep side facing up the valley and a gentle side, streamlined side, facing down the valley.
