Glaciers Flashcards
What is relief of land ?
The natural features of land
What is topography ?
The highest and lowest point in the area
Example of lowlands ?
The fens in East Anglia
Example of highlands ?
Lake District
Factors of last ice age
20,000 years ago
Ice was 3 km thick
Glacial period = when temperatures drop significantly
What is a glacier ?
A body of ice constantly moving under its own height. It was made by snow build up over many years
Freeze thaw weathering ?
Water enters a crevice in a rock
Water freezes and expands
Crevice expands
Cracks in rock get larger over time
What is Glacial weathering ?
The breakdown of rocks by the action of rain water or extreme temperatures
What is glacial erosion ?
The wearing away of land by flowing water or ice
What is abrasion ?
Rocks at bottom of glacier grind over the bedrock
Leaves sharp grooves called striations
What is plucking ?
Water form glacier surrounds rock
Water refreezes and rock becomes part of glacier
Rock is ripped out as glacier moves
What is sediment transported by a glacier called ?
Till
What is a corrie ?
Bowl shaped hollow with steep back wall (êrete) and sometimes have a small lake (tarn)
How does a corrie form ?
- Snow accumulates on top of a slope
- Ice becomes frozen and plucking occurs, this makes the back wall steeper
- Freeze thaw weathering occurs
- Abrasion occurs
- Glacier leaves till at front which forms a lip
- When all ice melts a tarn forms.
3 types of moraine
Medial - in middle
Lateral - on side (latissimus dorsi)
Ground moraine - on bottom
