Glacier Transportation Flashcards
1
Q
Moraine
A
Sediment transported by glacier
Transported in/on/under the ice
2
Q
Bulldozing
A
When the glacier pushes the loose debris ahead of it
3
Q
When does Deposition occur
A
When ice melts
Most melting occurs at front (snout) of glacier
Most deposition occurs here
4
Q
Ground moraine
A
Material dragged UNDER the glacier
Left behind when ice melts
Forms uneven hilly ground
5
Q
Lateral moraine
A
Forms at edges of glacier
Mostly ‘scree’ material fallen from freeze-thaw
Forms a low ridge on valley side
6
Q
Medial moraine
A
When tributary glacier joins main glacier (2 lateral moraines)
Single line of sediment -> forms a ridge down centre of valley
7
Q
Terminal moraine
A
Large amounts of material pile up at snout
Form high ridge
