glacial processes involved in the formation of glaciers Flashcards
what are the four main glacial processes
nivation, transportation, depostion, erosion
what are the two types of erosion
plucking (meltwater frozen to the rock will pluck it a the glacier advances) and abrasion(angular material embedded in the rock scores/ smoothes the valley surface)
what are four factors influencing rates of erosion
- debris size and shape
- relative hardness of bedrock
- basal water pressure
- sliding of basal ice
what is the main product of nivation
hillside hollows
what is nivation a collective term for
freeze thaw, solifluction, transport of running water and chemical weathering
what is transportation
moving ice is capable of carrying huge amounts of debris
what are the three ways debris can be carried by ice
- supra glacial - on top of the ice
- en glacial - within the ice
- sub glacial - at the base of the ice
what is deposition
glaciers will deposited their load when they do not have the energy to carry it
what are the two types of till
ablation till (material deposited by melting ice) lodgement till (deposited by an advancing glacier)
what are three distinctive characteristics of glacial till
angular or sub angular in shape, unstratified, unsorted
