Glacial Processes Flashcards
What is freeze-thaw weathering
-Water enters cracks in the rock.
-When temperatures drop, the water freezes and expands causing the crack to widen.
-The ice melts and water makes its way deeper into the cracks.
-The process repeats itself until the rock splits entirely.
What are the two types of erosion
Abrasion and plucking
What is abrasion
as the glacier moves downhill, rocks that have been frozen into the base and sides of the glacier scrape the rock beneath. The rocks scrape the bedrock like sandpaper, leaving scratches called striations behind.
What is plucking
rocks become frozen into the bottom and sides of the glacier. As the glacier moves downhill it ‘plucks’ the rocks frozen into the glacier from the ground.
How do glaciers move
Bulldozing or rotational slip
What is bulldozing
when rocks and debris, found in front of the glacier, are pushed downhill by the sheer force of the moving ice.
What is rotational slip
is the circular movement of the ice in the corrie.
Why do glaciers deposit sediment
when the glaciers start to melt or recede, the sediment is deposited as glacial till,
What is the sediment deposited by a glacier called
Glacial till
