Glacial Erosion Flashcards
Glacial erosion
Supraglcial debris
Is rock material that is carried on the surface of a glacier
Englacial debris
Is rock material that is carried in the main body of the glacier
Drift
Refers to all sediments deposited by glaciers
Till
Is material deposited directly by Glacier
Favio glacier material
Consist of rocks and other debris is deposited by melting ice or glassseal streams
Ways in which glacier landscapes are eroded
Abrasion
As the glacier moves, the rocks which are in the glacier Road the sides of the bottom of the valley
Freeze thaw action
Water gets into cracks in rocks. When temperature falls below freezing, the water expands as it turns into ice. This expansion puts pressure on the rock around it and the fragments of the rock may break off.
Plucking
Ice from the glacier melts due to the pressure and the water runs into cracks on the mountainside.
It refreezes almost immediately, breaking of pieces of rock, which become embedded in the glacier
Ways in which glacier transports material
There is a material in the eyes of the glacier which could have been on the surface of the glacier but was buried by the snowfall
On the surface of the glacier –a glacier carries material on its surface, at the sides close to the valley slopes and in the middle
