What is certification?
Designed to recognize expertise by a third party.
What is the GISCI?
An independent institute of GIS professional organizations. Formed by URISA in 1999 to explore GIS certification.
Who are the GISCI Member Organizations?
The American Association of Geographers (AAG)
The National States Geographic Information Council (NSGIC)
The University Consortium of Geographic Information Science (UCGIS)
The Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA)
What do surveyors do?
Determine the exact position of features and the angels and distances between them.
What do mappers do?
Create visual representations of real-world locations.
What do photogrammetrists do?
Deduce the positions of features and the angles and distances between them by measuring from photographs.
What do Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) users do?
Subset of mappers. Use CAD software to create detailed plans for structures (like buildings) but also for mapping large areas. CAD files may or may not be spatially referenced.
What is a GIS Specialist?
Someone skilled in the analysis of geospatial data and in all aspects of Geomatics.
What is Geomatics?
The discipline of gathering, storing, processing, and delivering geographic information.
