gingiva margins Flashcards
Fibrous mucous membrane surrounding teeth and covering coronal portion of alveolar process
is what type of epithelium?
stratified squamous epithelium
where does free gingiva extend from?
Extends from gingival margin to free gingival groove
Free Gingival Epithelium what are the 3 kinds?
Oral epithelium
Sulcular or crevicular epithelium
Junctional epithelium
what is oral epithelium?
Continuous with and similar to epithelium of attached gingiva
Underlying connective tissue contains rete ridges, giving stippled appearance
what are the fibres of free gingiva?
Circular
Free gingival
Transeptal
Also longitudinal fibres running above alveolar crest in mandibular teeth and below in maxillary teeth
what is circular fibres ?
Form collar around neck of tooth holding free gingiva tightly against it
what are free gingival fibres?
Originates from cervical portion of root
goes into free gingiva
what are transeptal fibres?
Run from cementum on distal aspect of one tooth, to mesial of next tooth
what is attached gingiva?
Fibrous connective tissue merges with periosteum therefore “mucoperiosteum”
