dentine 1 Flashcards
composition of dentine?
70% Inorganic Calcium Hydroxyapatite Crystals
30% Organic Matrix (Collagen and Water)
3 features of dentine?
Calcified connective tissue
Softer than enamel, harder than bone
Yellowish/white giving the tooth colour through translucent enamel
Crown – it is covered by enamel
Root – it is covered by cementum
what cells lay down dentine?
odontoblasts
what does pre dentine contain?
collagen fibres and ground substance
Each odontoblast as it forms dentine leaves behind an
odontoblastic process
Each process becomes enclosed in a microscopic tube called
dentinal tubule
what are the 4 structures of dentine?
Dentine tubules
Incremental lines
Interglobular dentine
Granular layer of Tomes
Granular layer of Tomes where is this found
found only on the root, immediately below the cementum
what is the main inorganic salt of dentine?
calcium hydrooxyapatite
what do dentine tubules contain?
odontoblastic processes
give the name of the lines which result from the alternate active and resting phases of dentine formation?
incremental lines
what is the name of more pronounced lines of the incremental lines?
the contour lines of Owen
what is the name when destroying dentine tubules and making them seem darker under the light of a microscope?
dead tracks
what is the name when milder irritation results in the dentinal tubules being filled up with more dentine?
translucent dentine
what is the name when dentine is slowly added to the pulpal surface of dentine throughout life gradually reducing the size of the pulp?
secondary dentine
