A
Faecal oral

What is the pathogenesis of giardia?
A
Cysts turn into trophozoites that live on the intestinal villi, then encyst and cysts released in faeces

What are the symptoms of giardiasis?
A
Asymptomatic Watery diarrhoea Steatorrhoea Malabsorption Failure to thrive

How do you diagnose giardia?
A
Stool microscopy for cysts
Trophozoites seen in watery diarrhoea
Giardia antigen
Small bowel biopsy

How do you treat giardiasis?
A
Most infections are self limiting
Metronidazole
Albendazole
If pregnant paromomycin

How do you prevent giardia?
A
Surface water treatment
Boil and filter water
Improve hygiene
