GI Tract Flashcards
Gastrin has two forms
17aa (little gastrin), response to eating
34aa (big gastrin), response inbetween meals secreted by low basal levels
What is gastrin secreted by
G cells in the Antrum of the stomach
What does gastrin do?
Increases hydrogen ion secretion by gastric parietal cells which lowers stomach ph then activates pepsinogen secreted by chief cells
Can the vagus nerve stimulate gastrin release
YES
Gastrin is inhibited by
Somatostain and low stomach ph
What is Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
Gastrin secreting tumor (gastrinoma)
Frequently occurs in pancreas non B cell
Results in atrophy of Gastric mucosa
How to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
H2 respect or blockers
Inhibitor of the H+ pump
Removal of the tumor
What does CCK do
Coordinates and promotes fat digestion and absorption
33aa structurally related to gastrin
What two receptors bind CCK
CCKA- only bind CCK
CCKB- both CCK and gastrin
What is secreted by I cells of the duodenal and jejunal mucosa
CCK
But not in response to triglycerides
What kind of a meal would stimulate CCK
Fat and protein
What are the 5 functions of CCK
- Contraction of gallbladder
- Secretion of pancreatic enzymes
- Secretion of Bicarbonate from pancreaus
- Trophic effect on exocrine pancreas and gallbladder
- Inhibition of gastric emptying
What is secretin
27 a.a. Peptide similar to glucagon structure
Is a alpha helix
What is secreted by S cells of the duodenum in response to increased ph aka H+
Secretin
What does secretin do
Inhibits the effects of gastrin on parietal cells
Helps neutralize the ph
