entamoeba histolytica
GI sporozoa
cryptosporidium parvum
cyclospora cayetenesis
microsporidia
giardia lamblia trophozoite structure
sting ray shaped
giardia lamblia lifecycle
ingest cysts excyst into trophozoite trophozoites live in duodenum cysts form in LI released in stool
most common intestinal parasite in US
giardia lamblia
giardiasis incubation period
1 - 3 weeks
giardiasis Sx
abdominal pain
vomiting
fatty, foul-smelling secretory diarrhea
malabsorb fat and carb (weight loss)
entamoeba histolytica trophozoite structure
ingested RBCs inside
entamoeba histolytica lifestyle
ingest cysts (fruit/veggies) troph in LI may invade intestinal mucosa - produce cysts pass in stool
entamoeba histolytica mech
cysteine protease - degrade collagen
makes phospholipase - cytoolytic for enterocytes
damage –> inflammatory diarrhea
amoebiasis Sx
(85% asymptomatic)
fever, flask-shaped lesions
dysentery (mucous/blood in stool)
extra-intestinal – lung/liver abcesses
crytosporidium parvum oocyst structure
acid fast
stain pink
smaller than cyclospora
crytosporidium parvum mech
ingest oocytes (cysts) (IMMEDIATELY INFECTIVE)
sporozooites invade enterocytes in SI
secretory diarrhea
crytosporidiosis sx
secretory diarrhea
(life-threatening to immunocpomp)
no fever, mucous, blood
