GI/Liver Flashcards
What is the composition of the gut as a muscular tube?
Inside:
Lumen
Epithelium
Basement membrane
Lamina proprietary
Muscularis mucosare
Submucosa
Muscular is propria - inner circular layer, outer longitudinal layer
Adventitia (may be lined by serosa (mesophilial cells))
Outside

What in the gut has a different structure to everything else?
The stomach
Lumen
Epithelium
BM
Lamina propria
Muscularis mucosae
Muscularis propria - innermost oblique layer, middle circular layer and the outside longitudinal layer
Submucosa? (Here?)
Adventitia
What is the liver like?
Classic lobule
“Area drained by one central hepatic venule”
An artificial construct for understanding hepatic architecture
Roughly hexagonal
It consists of hexagonal plates of hepatocytes stacked on top of each other
Central vein surrounded by portal triad: bile duct, portal vein and hepatic artery (DAV)
What does the liver contain?
Portal tract - portal veins, arteries and bile ducts
Hepatocytes arranged in cords with intervening sinusoids
Central veins
What is the acinus?
The acinus
Architectural concept based around the blood supply rather than drainage
An artificial construct for understanding hepatic architecture
How do some hepatocytes differ?
Some hepatocytes will be more richly oxygenated than others
Acinus vs classic lobule?
What are hepatocytes?
Principle functional cells of liver
Polyhedral epithelial cells
Abundant mitochondria
Large central spherical nuclei
Prominent nucleoli
May be binucleate
What are teh three important surfaces of the hepatocytes?
Sinusoidal (70%)
Permits exchange of material with blood (space of disse)
Canalicular (15%)
Permits excretion of bile
Intracellular (15%)
What do hepatocytes include?
Hepatocytes
Large nucleus (>2n)
Prominent nucleolus
Active Golgi apparatus
Prominent endoplasmic reticulum
Lots of mitochondria
Numerous peroxisomes
What are sinusoids like?
Sinusoids
Highly specialised blood vessels
Thin discontinuous fenestrated endothelium
No basement membrane
Contains scattered Kupffer cells
What is the interhepatic biliary tree like?
Intrahepatic biliary tree
Simple cuboidal-to-columnar epithelium
Canaliculi -> bile ductules -> trabecular ducts -> bile ducts
What are teh functions for the gallbladder?
Functions
Concentrates and stores bile
Expels bile via common bile duct into duodenum
Specialised mucosa
Smooth muscle layer
What is in the gallbladder?
Gallbladder
Specialised mucosa
Simple columnar epithelium
Microvilli
Thrown into folds
Adapted for water and salt absorption
Connective tissue lamina propria
