small meals, reduced fat, reduced weight, elevate head of bed, avoid NSAIDS
Antacids
neutralize HCL
Magnesioum salts
can cause diarrhea
bicarbonate
causes gas
aluminum salts
not very effective
calcium carbonate
chalky and constipation
H2 receptor blockers
reduce gastric secretions by blocking receptors in gut. will not reduce histamine
Cimetidine, ranitidine, famotidine
Proton pump inhibitors
disrupt hydrogen exchange for K in parietal cells which blocks production and release of HCL into gut
SE: diarrhea, interferes with digestionm increases food allergies, oral sores/ulcers
Often combo’d with H2 blockers
Omeprazole, lamsoprazole, esomeprazole
Peptic ulcer disease
suppress acidity or cure if H-pylori related.
Prevac
combination of lansoprazole and Amoxicillin and clarithromycin
milk of magnesia
may also help kill bacteria
treats peptic ulcers
