Assessing bowel sounds
Start at right lower quadrant and move clockwise
When Auscultating…
Auscultating between meals only
Normal bowel sounds contain
5-35 high pitch clicks & gurgles/per minute
In order to determine no bowel sounds
Must hear no bowel sounds for 5 minutes
Order of abdominal assessment
Inspect, Auscultate, Percuss, Palpate
(Do this order so we won’t alter bowel sounds)
Abnormal findings when inspecting the abdomen
Lesions, Ecchymosis/umbilical area, distention, edema/swelling, masses, unusual pulsations, pain associated with appendicitis
American Cancer Society recommendation for early detection colorectal cancer
FECAL ACCULT BLOOD TEST (FOBT) (annually), START REGULAR SCREENING AT THE AGE 45 and continue until 75, colonoscopy (q10 yr), sigmoidoscopy (q5 yr)
Screening recommendations for cancer prevention:
FECAL ACCULT BLOOD TEST(annually), DIETARY CHANGES, colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, maintain a healthy diet/weight, no smoking/alcohol, know family history, exercise, avoid red meats/high fat/low fiber.
