What is spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP)?

A

Translocation of enteric pathogens across the bowel mucosa and into the peritoneal fluid

A complication of liver failure

Dx: PARACENTESIS

Cx of peritoneal fluid will identify the specific pathogen

Tx:
- Cefotaxime is successful in treating 78% - 98% of cases
- Na restriction
- diuretics

Which labs indicate upper GIB?

A

Hyper - Natremia d/t loss of fluid thru emesis

elevated BUN d/t large protein load from the breakdown of blood

elevated PT from either liver disease or AC therapy

elevated BUN/Creat ratio d/t digestion of blood or prerenal azotemia

metabolic acidosis d/t hypotension
