intussusception

A

telescoping of one bowel segment into adjacent segment
Symptoms:
-colicky abdominal pain, vomiting, bloody stools
-between episodes of pain, child is lethargy
-currant jelly stools (blood tinged stools mixed with mucus)
-child may draw knees towards chest

Triad:abdominal pain, palpable sausage shaped abdominal mass, blood per rectum

Fecal test: + blood, - leukocytes

US/plain film: target sign

Tx: reduction and diagnosis with air or saline enema
