GI Flashcards
common clinical manifestations of GI disorders
nausea/vomiting
-diarrhea
types of diarrhea
osmotic, secretory, motility
osmotic diarrhea
nonabsorbable substance in intestines draws water into lumen by osmosis
-large volume diarrhea
-caused by lactose intolerance, saline enemas, laxatives, diet foods
secretory diarrhea
larg volume diarrhea by excessive mucosal secretion of chloride or bicarbonate-rich fluid
-or inhibition of net sodium absorption
-caused by bacterial growth, too much bile, slats, hormones
motility diarrhea
excessive motility decreases transit time, mucosal surface contact and opportunities for fluid absorption
-causes: antibiotics, stimulant laxatives
mechanical obstruction of esophagus
masses (tumors), esophageal strictures, achalasia
