Q

How does it bioluminesce?

A

It releases calcium ion that bind to a protein called aequorean, which release blue light. The blue light is absorbed by GFP which gives off green light

Q

Who are the founder of GFP?

A

Osamu Shimomura. He purified GFP form jelly fish.

Marty chlafie–first person to express the jelly fish in bacteria and c. elegans

Roger Tsien–made color variants

They all won the nobel prizes in 2008

Q

What is GFP?

A

Blue light goes in, it excites the protein and it release green light. It requires no enzyme, no cofactor to become florescent.

small protein–238 amino acids. Only three amino acids must rearrange their structure to go from something that is not florescent to florescent.

Q

What amino acids must be changed for it to glow?

A

Ser, Tyr, Gly rearranged to contact with certain side groups. Changing the amino acid can change the color.
