Chapter 3 Energy Flashcards
The equation for the oxidation of glucose?
C6H12O6 + 6O2 –> 6CO2 + 6H2O
Is oxydation exergonic or endergonic?
Exergonic reactions release energy. Endergonic consume it.
Photosynthesis equation
6 CO2 + 6 H2O ? C6H12O6 + 6 O2
T or F, the most oxidized state is also the lowest energy state?
True
What is delta G?
The change in free energy after a reaction
Endergonic
If the change in free energy after a reaction is positive what type reaction was it?
It was an endergonic reaction.
What does gibbs free energy measure?
whether or not a reaction will occur spontaneously
What is a thermodynamically favorable reaction?
One that can occur w/o outside help. It also increased disorder in the world. It is using stored energy and by using stored energy it is increasing entropy.
Exergonic is favorable. Endergonic is not.
What is energetic equilibrium?
When a reaction occurs equally in forward or reverse
What is enthalpy?
Heat of a system
What are activated carriers?
small molecules responsible for energy storage and election transfer. Used to energetically couple reactions. Moreover, breaking of activated carriers can be energetically couple with unfavorable reactions.
What does energetically unfavorable mean?
Need energy added to it.
What do NAD and NADH do?
They store/carry high energy electron for other reactions.
What is thermal motion?
allows a process of diffusion, which moves everything around in the cytosol rapidly and allows substates to find their enzymes by trying to fit with thousands of them.
