What are risk factors for gestational diabetes?

A
  • High BMI
    • Previous macrosomic baby or gestational diabetes
    • Family history/ethnic prevalence of diabetes
    • PCOS
    • Advanced maternal age >40
    • Low fibre or high glycaemic index diet

How is gestational diabetes diagnosed?

A

75g OGTT

* Fasting venous plasma glucose ≥ 5.1 mmol/l, or
* One hour value ≥ 10 mmol/l, or
* Two hours after OGTT ≥ 8.5 mmol/l

When should gestational diabetes be screened for?

A

Screening for GD should be done in women who’ve had it before immediately and at 24-28 weeks, and for those with other risk factors at 24-28 weeks.
