Gero 3 Flashcards
IV - Independent variable
Variables that are under the control or manipulation of the researcher The object of the study is to determine if particular IV chosen do in fact relation to variations in the DV
Inferential statistics
Focus is inferring from a sample what is likely to happen in a population Generally hypothesis driven and the goal is to support or refute the hyphothesis They draw conclusions about the population based on records/results found the in the sample
Informed consent
One of the basic principles of respect for the person undergoing consent. Enables the person to become well-informed before entering the decision making process. The document used must be written in a language understood by the patient and be dated and signed by the patient and at least one witness. Signed consent should be obtained by the person performing the procedure. Person must be deemed competent.
Interdisciplinary
Beyond multidisciplinary, this is an approach involving active collaboration and making questions and solving issues.
Intergenerational equity
As demographics shift with population aging, and fewer younger people not yet working, and more older people in retirement for longer periods. Applies as society deals with how should resources be allocated across different age groups? who should pay and how much? For what programs, to serve which populations within a given society?
Internalized ageism
In-group discrimination in which older adults marginalize and discriminate against other older people
Internal validity
is the extent to which a causal conclusion based on a study is warranted, which is determined by the degree to which a study minimizes systematic error (or ‘bias’). It contrasts with external validity, the degree to which it is warranted to generalize results to other contexts. Whether the independent variable (IV) really relates to the dependent variable (DV) in the manner claimed. Refers both to how well a study was run (research, design, operational definitions used, how variables were measured, what was/wasn’t measured, etc.) and how confidently one can conclude that the observed effect(S) were produced solely by the IV an not extraneous ones. In experimental research, answers the question - was it really the treatment that caused the difference between the subjects in the control and experimental groups?

Purpose is to provide the reader with immediate source
Between subjects design
The basic idea behind this type of study is that participants can be part of the treatment group or the control group, but cannot be part of both. If more than one treatment is tested, a completely new group is required for each.
Auxiliary grant rate
Rate assisted living facilities agree to charge to individuals who are eligible for auxiliary grant assistance.
Auxiliary grant
Supplement to income for recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and other aged, blind, or disabled individuals residing in assisted living facilities or adult foster care to help them afford the cost of their care.
Nursing home
A facility licensed with an organized professional staff and inpatient beds and that provides continuous nursing and other health-related, psychosocial and personal services to patients who are not in an acute phase of illness, but who primarly require continued care on an inpatient basis.
Metaethics
A large approach that tries to discover the nature/meaning/source of ethical reasons we prepare as valid for making judgments on morality.
Ethical distress
A situation in which you face a challenge about how to maintain your integrity or the integrity of the professiona
Ethical dilemna
A common type of situation that involves two (or more) morally correct courses of action that cannot both be followed
