Geriatrics Intro Flashcards
What is the definition of frailty?
Increased Vulnerability = Decline in reserve + function in multiple physiology –> Everyday function compromised
What are the main complex issues of Geriatrics?
1) Slower response to treatment
2) Frailty
3) Complex co-morbidity
4) Different patterns of disease presentation
What is another explanation of frailty
Person’s organs working at maximum capacity just to keep their body functioning on day to day basis
What are the 5 Geriatric Giant (M’s)?
1) Mind (Delirium, Dementia, Depression)
2) Mobility (Falls, Impaired Gait/Balance)
3) Medications (Med burden, Polypharmacy)
4) Matters most (Ind. meaningful health preferences/outcomes)
5) Multi-complexity (Multimorbidity, Bio-psycho-social)
What is Acopia?
Slang term for no medical matter, mainly a social problem with no original presenting complaint
What is the main problem with treating older people?
Reduced organ function and polypharmacy = ^ Side effects and reactions
What is deconditioning?
Deterioration in function from acute illness
What are the main factors considered in a Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA)?
1) Medical plan and assessment
2) Mental health (Old Age Psych)
3) Social Hx and BG
4) Functional Assessment e.g. ADL’s, physio, OT
What is the definition of Rehabilitation?
Restoring a patient to maximum function
What are the main legal/ethical issues in Geriatrics?
1) End of Life planning
2) Discharge destination
3) Dementia/delirium
4) Mental Capacity Act
