Geoscience Vocab Flashcards
Coordinates
A numerical system system of navigation involving longitude and latitude
Equator
The circle around the middle of the world
Field
An open land, especially one planted with crops
Gradient
The rate at which a field changes
International date line
The 180 degrees meridian
Isolines
Lines connecting points of equal field value
Isosurfaces
Surfaces on which every point has the same field value
Landform
Physical features of earths surface that have a characteristic shape and are produced by natural processes
Landscape
A region in which the land-forms are related by their structure
Landscape region
A grouping of landscapes with similar relief
Latitude
The angular distance north or south of the equator
Longitude
East and west
Map
A representation of the earth on paper
Map scale
The ratio between distance on a map and actual distance on a map and actual distance on the ground
Meridian
Semicircles on which all points have the same longitude
Parallels
Circles on which all points have the same latitude north or south of the equator
Plain
A flat area at low elevation
Plateau
A large flat region with an elevation
Prime meridian
The zero point on a map
Profile
What a cross section of the land between two points would look like viewed from the side
Time zone
A region in which the same time is used throughout
Topographic map
A field map in which the field value is elevation above sea level
Contour interval
The vertical distance between the elevations represented by adjacent contour lines on a map
