Paragraph 2: Virginia’s representative at the first Continental Congress

A

I was Virginia’s representative at the first continental congress. I was then chosen as commander in-chief of the American (Continental) army. When I took over the army they were poorly equipped and badly trained. We defeated the British in Boston in 1775. We suffered a heavy defeat in New York in 1776, but recovered well and won battles at Princeton and Trenton.

Paragraph 3: Allies

A

German troops known as Hessians, joined with the British and they managed to take over Philadelphia. However, we won the battle of saratoga and captured 8000 British soldiers. This win encouraged the French to join the war on our side. The French were able to attack the British ships in the Atlantic.

Paragraph 4: Camp at Valley Forge in winter 1777-1778

A

During the winter 1777-1778 we set up camp at Valley Forge in Pennsylvania. The winter was harsh and we lost a lot of men to smallpox. A German, von Steuben, arrived at our camp and trained the men. His arrival lifted their spirits, and we became a well-organised and disciplined army.

Paragraph 5: War ended ; elected President.

A

We won a major victory at Yorktown in 1780. The French set up a naval blockade and this forced the British to surrender. When the war ended I had hopes of retiring to my Mount Vernon estate, however in 1789 I was asked to become the First President of America. I was re-elected in 1793 and finally retired this year in 1797.
