Geology And Processes Flashcards
What are the 3 types of rock
Igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary
Name one example of an igneous rock
Basalt, granite
What is igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rock connected to
They are connected to the rock cycle
What is the rock cycle
The process at which rock change, for example; changing shape, texture and their overall form.
Name and example of the metamorphic rock
Schist, shale
Name an example of a sedimentary
Sandstone, limestones
How are metamorphic rocks made
They dont melt, but the minerals they contain are changed chemically, forming metamorphic rocks. Sometimes, metamorphic rocks are formed when rocks are close to some molten magma/ lava, and so get heated up. However metamorphic rock are not made from melting rock
How are sedimentary rock made
They are formed when sediments are deposited out of ice, wind, and water flow carrying the particles in suspension. It mainly occurs when weathering and erosion breaks down into a rock into loose material
How are igneous rocks made
It is formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava. Igneous rock may form with or without crystallisation, either below the surface as intrusive rock or on the surface as extrusive
What is weathering
To wear away or change the appearance or texture of something over time by long exposure to the atmosphere
The 4 main types of weathering are:
Freeze thaw, onion skin, biological and chemical
