3.3 City Change And City Land Use Flashcards
What is suburbanisation and why did it happen
- when developed cities become to crowed and people who can afford it move out of city centre of new ‘suburbs’
- it happened because when migrant came looking for jobs the city was the first place they would look so they came and the city became so crowded so wealthier people moved out
How did suburbanisation affect where people lived
- it either affected them one way or another, some would move into the city meaning more jobs but the houses were smaller and more cramped whereas the people which moved out had bigger housing and more greenery
Why did counter urbanisation happen
Again it happened because people noticed that if you move out of the larger cities you will find there will be more space and there will be many people looking for the jobs in the cities
What is Re urbanisation and why did it happen
Re urbanisation is when most places to the industrial revolution and better transport attracted people to come to the cities for works resulting in growth
Contrast urbanisation to counter-urbanisation
- urbanisation is when people move to the city for jobs and manufacturing and the city grows
- counter urbanisation is when a city get over crowded and polluted to a point when people who can afford it move out of the city to new suburbs leading to population decline
Why do people move back to urban areas in re-urbanisation
This occurs because usually in cities, there are the most jobs and usually there are always high skilled jobs available as the low skilled jobs are taken up by the migrants. This means there is a good chance wealthier people are going to be back in the high skilled jobs
What is the differences between commercial, industrial, and residential land is urban areas
Commercial land use is based around shops and hotel and office building, industrials land use is based around factories and residential is based around housing
Accessibility affect land use because…
Accessibility affect land use because it need to be around the city, for instance shops need to be accessible to make business therefore it needs to be in the city
How does planning affect land use
It affect land use as it involves how a city is to look and develop. Plans are made which illustrate which land uses will be permitted in different part if the city
Give two or more pull factors leading to counter urbanisation
Accessible, larger shopping centres, more open space, better schools and services
What is the difference between informal and formal employment and give examples
-informal employment is an unofficial and unregulated economy where no records are kept, there are no contract or employment rights
-formal employment is an official and regulated economy where they have to meet legal standards and pay tax etc.
An example of a informal employment would be perhaps market stalls where people can make their daily income whereas formal employment would be business which work part time/ full time and earn and wage or salary
What type of countries does informal economy take place
Developing countries where there may be higher amounts of poverty compared to other countries
What type of countries might formal economy take place
In developed countries where you might see more urban areas with industries
What type of job occur in a pre industrial stage
Farming, mining and fishing. Usually in the pre industrial age, employment was high
What occurs in the industrial stage
Manufacturing, transport service, water and electrical services. Usually the employment rate is average at this stage
