Geological Agents Flashcards
Those which derive their energy from external sources and ultimately from the sun
Exogenous Processes
Geologic agents that originate from the earth’s surface
Epigene
Those that originate from within the earth’s crust
Endogenous Processes
Geologic agents that originate underneath the earth’s crust
Hypogene
It is an epigene geologic agent with a three fold process. Process by which the original irregularities of the earth’s surface are removed and creates a levelled surface.
Gradation
What’s the 3-fold process of gradation
- The surface is decayed and eroded
- Products of this decay and erosion are transported
- Deposited at usually lower levels
Two major categories of Gradation
- Degradation
- Aggradation
Material from a high relief feature is removed by exogenous or external processes
Degradation
Factors affecting degradation
1.Properties of the material on which the process is operating
2. Energy available
3. tools used by the agents
Process of elevation of low-lying tracts thru depositions of materials, by various epigene geological agents
Aggradation
Two main endogenous processes
Volcanism and Diastrophism
Elevates or builds up the portions of the earth’s surface
Diastrophism
2 types of diastrophism
- Orogenic
- Epeirogenic
Refers to mountain building with deformation of the Earth’s crust
Orogeny
Refers to regional uplift without marked deformation
Epeirogeny
