Geography winter exam Flashcards
Biological weathering
Break down of rocks by living things.( animals or plants/trees ).
Chemical weathering
Weathering caused by action of water containing small amounts of water.
Onion skin weathering
Is the process which the layers of the rock are peeled off due to the continued heating and cooling off the rock.
Freeze thaw weathering
Weathering where water freezes in a crack, expanding the crack. Melting again then freezing.
Weathering
Weathering takes place when rocks are broken up and weakened by elements of weather.
Erosion
Erosion is the wearing away and removal of loosened material from the land by agents of erosion.
Transportation
The process by which material is carried by wind or water.
Deposition
Material that has been eroded is transported and later put down (or dropped) when energy is low.
River erosion
Every day rivers wear away tiny bits of rock from their bed and get into the banks on either side of the channel.
Ice erosion
A glacier is a tongue of ice moving down a valley. Stones and boulders that fall on to it freeze into the ice and act like sandpaper on the rocks beneath. As the glacier moves it carries the material downwards and at the same time wears away the valley bottom and sides.
Sea erosion
During storms each wave hits the rock with a weight of several tonnes. When this is repeated many times, the rock is weakened and pieces break off.
Wind erosion
The wind picks up tiny particles of sand and blasts them against anything that is in the way.
