Geography - Plates Flashcards
How do plates move?
Plates sit on top of the mantle. Magma in the mantle is moved around in a circular motion by the convection current. Convection currents in the mantle cause the plates to move.
How do plates collide and separate?
Hot magma currents in the mantle rise up and join or separate underneath the crust. This causes the plates to collide, separate, slide past one another.
Who talked about a supercontinent?
Alfred Wegener
Said continents were once joined together
what is a destructive plate
destructive or convergent (colliding) pressure builds up and heavier mantle is pushed under the lighter plate. The heavier plate melts into the mantle.
This is called subduction this forms fold mountains.
What is a constructive plate
plate separate. Plate move apart creating a gap in between. Magma fills the gap it cools and hardens to form new crust.
Explain what a transform plate is
sliding plates, passive boundaries. These plates are locked together and release energy when they slide past one another these cause earthquakes and fault lines.
