Geography - Managing Coastal Processes Flashcards
The four examples of things humans have made to protect managing coastal processes
Rock armour
Seawall
Gabions
Groynes
Rock armour definition
Rock armour refers to large rocks and boulders that are placed along the coastline to protect against erosion
definition of seawall
Sea walls are large concrete defence structures built at the back of beaches that experience high levels of sea erosion
Gabions and definition
Gabions are welded wire or mesh cages filled with rocks resistant to erosion
They are stacked on top of one another at the back of the beach
They break the power of a crashing wave and lower the speed of erosion
Many people prefer gabions and Rockmor to the construction of a seawall because they fit in with the local environment
definition of groynes
groynes are wooden or concrete barriers that run along the beach from Buckshore to foreshore
m they replaced at a 90° angle to the sea and the purpose is to destroy longshot drift and prevent the transportation of material along the beach.
This prevents a buildup of sand at one end of the beach
