Geography In Everyday Life topic 2 Flashcards
What is development?
-Development results in an improvement in standard of living
What is sustainable development
- meets the needs of the present population by achieving high standards of living
- The 3 Key is Social, Environmental, Economic
- All 3 development must be balanced but however it is not always balanced
What is Economic sustainability?
- A neighbourhood has a high enough population density which helps to support local businesses and keep transport and infrastructure costs low
- Buildings and objects are usually located close to each other.
What is social sustainability?
- Achieved by ensuring residents feel included and have a sense of shared identity
- This can be fostered by having shared community spaces to promote regular social interactions
Environmentally sustainable
- Ample protection for nature, wildlife can thrive in our urban spaces and human-wildlife coexistence
- Having facilities that support waste minimisation and recycling, conveniently located facilities to encourage residents to recycle.
- Energy and water-efficient design approaches for buildings and landscapes.
Define ecosystem?
An ecosystem is a space where the living communities and non-living communities interact with each other
What are ecosystem services?
- Provisioning
- Regulating
- Cultural
- Supporting
What are provisioning ecosystem services?
- Tangible resources that people can get from ecosystems
What are regulating ecosystem services?
- The benefits obtained from the regulation like climate regulation, disease outbreak and flood.
Cultural ecosystem services
- Intangible resources that benefit us, like aesthetic experiences
Supporting ecosystem services
- Services that necessary for the functioning of all other ecosystem services including like soil formation
What are hazards?
- Something that may cause loss of life, it can be classified as natural or man-made
What are fire hazards?
- Common causes are included unattended cooking and faulty electrical appliances.
What are the impacts of fire hazards?
- Health Impacts: Suffer from burn injuries if they are unable to evacuate in time
- Property damages: Fires can destroy commercial or residential properties which leads to economic losses.
What are air pollutions?
- occurs due to the presence of containment or pollutant substances in the air that do not disperse properly
What are the hazards of air pollution?
Health impacts: Respiratory infections, heart diseases and lung cancer
What are traffic hazards?
The common causes are speeding, red-light running and drink-driving
What are some impacts of hazards?
Health impacts: People may suffer serious injuries when involved in a traffic accident which may lead to disabilities or loss of life.
What is environmental stewardship?
- Refers to the action taken by individuals or groups, to protect, care for or responsibly use the environment to pursue environmental and/or social outcomes
What is disaster risk?
-Refers to the likelihood of damage to properties, injuries, and loss of lives from a disaster.
1: The characteristic of hazard
2: The conditions determined by physical, social, economic, and environmental factors
3: The situation of people located in hazard-prone areas.
What is disaster risk management?
- plans an actions that are implemented to prevent new risks
- Strengthens community resilience
What is community resilience?
- The ability of a community to resist, adapt and recover from impacts.
- It can be developed by:
1. Strengthening of relationships among residents and raising their awareness of potential hazards
2. Developing residents’ ability to organize themselves and equip themselves with resources to resist, adapt and recover from a disaster.
‘Strengthening of relationships among residents’ and raising their awareness of potential hazards’
- The risk management can only be effective and sustainable if there is widespread support
- Residents are encouraged to get to know their neighbourhoods so they can depend on each other.
