Geography(im going to kill myself) Flashcards
what is the inner core?
hottest layer of earth, solid metal
what is the Outer core
Liquid metal, very dense, layer outside the inner core
what is the crust
Thinnest most outer layer, cold, hard, fragile rock
what is the mantle
Thicket layer, in between the outer core and the crust, hot molten rock
Earth is broken up into several large pieces called____
Plates
how many plates make up earths crust
15 main plates
what is ‘Oceanic’
underneath the ocean
what is ‘Continental’
The land, or above the ocean
what do convection currents do
move tectonic plates
how does Convection currents work
Hot material rises near the crust, cools, becomes heavier, and sinks. As it sinks, it heats up again and rises again. This cycle repeats and pushes the tectonic plates apart.
A plate boundary exists____
between two pates
What are the three types of boundaries
Divergent boundaries, Convergent boundaries, Transform boundaries
what is a divergent boundary
two plates pulling apart from each other
what is a convergent boundary
two plates coming together
what is a transform boundary
two plates sliding past each other in the opposite direction
what are the four(4) main physical processes
weathering, erosion, deposition, glaciation
what are physical processes
naturally occurring actions that the earth does which changes the structure of land
What is building up
Building up refers to processes that create or add to landforms
what are building up processes
Deposition, Glaciation, Tectonic plate Movement
what is deposition
the laying down of sediment in new location
what is glaciation
the formation, movement and melting of ice sheets
what can wear down a surface
water, ice and wind
how do glaciers form
when more snow accumulates than melt
what do glaciers do
they break earths surface, carry the broken pieces to new places, and drop them off when the glacier melts
How did glaciers shape the landscape of the Muskoka region
made the terrain rocky and made more lakes
How did glaciers shape the landscape of the southern ontario
glaciers melted, and dropped off lots of soil from Northern Ontario, which made it GREAT FOR FARMING
draw the rock cycle. right now. thats right. you wont
did you get it right?
how is Igneous Rock formed
from the cooling and hardening of lava
how is sedimentary Rocks formed
Formed by the gluing together of sediments over millions of years
how is Metamorphic Rocks formed
Formed when pre-existing rock (igneous or sedimentary) changed under a lot of heat and pressure
what are the 7 regions of canada
Arctic Lands, Cordillera, Interior Plains, Hudson Bay Lowlands, Canadian shield, St Lawrence lowlands, Appalachian Region
