Geography - Geographical Issues Flashcards
Effects of human activity on coastal landscapes;
- Coastal management
Hard engineering used to stop coastal eroding - causes further erosion down the coast due to the preventing of LSD
Construction
Dredging removes sand and gravel from docks and other essential structures
Housing + development
Housing is cheaper in coastal areas - also a lot of office relocation to these areas because of the high cost of property in the inner city
Agriculture
Marshes etc.. ideal for farmland. Rising sea levels can ruin farmland especially in wet and colder seasons.
Industry
North sea gas is piped from the sea onshore. Its an example of how essential development brings conflict with tourists.
What are direct impacts
Ocurring because of something purposely put in place to protect the area of coastline
What are indirect impacts
Occurring because of something used to protect another area of the coastline
Brake down and information about swanage bay;
Half of it is built up. Vital tourism spot. Several sea defences. Good example of a mixture of semi natural and human landscapes along the coast.
Reasons for rising sea levels
Melting of ice caps caused by radiation from climate change and greenhouse gases, arctic sheet is melting created massive rise of sea levels and volume of water, The higher the temperature of the sea the more it will expand
In which ways does rising sea levels effect coastal processes
Storms; warmer atmosphere has more energy and therefore bigger storms which make bigger waves
Erosion - sea levels effecting coastal processes
Positions of wave cut notches will arrive and expand erosion of cliffs. Soft rock coastline will experience a lot more erosion causing significant damage to homes, the environment etc…
Deposition - rising sea levels effecting coastal processes
Rising waters mean landforms such as beaches, spits and bars etc.. will be increasingly at risk of day to day erosion and submergance,
Buildings and businesses in terms of how rising sea levels affect coastal processes
They become under threat
How does rising sea levels affect the people
People are forced to relocate buildings to ensure they wont be affected
What is a storm surge
When a high tide is increased due to stormy conditions such as wind and gails
