Bethlehem
Small Jewish town in Judea, 5 miles south of Jerusalem. Birthplace of Jesus.
Nazareth
Small Jewish town in southern Galilee, 15 miles west of the southern end of the Sea of Galilee. Hometown of Jesus.
Capernaum
A small Jewish city of Galilee at the north end of the Sea of Galilee. Possible hometown of several of Jesus’ disciples and base of Jesus’ public ministry in Galilee.
Jerusalem
City in the central mountains of Judea, about 15 miles west of the north end of the Dead Sea. Population approx. 20,000-50,000 in Jesus’ lifetime. Seat of Jewish religion and government in the first century.
Caesarea Maritima
Roman city and capital of the province of Judea. Located in the northwest corner of the province on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.
Syrian Antioch
Large Greek city (approx. 200,000 population) near the mouth of the Orontes River in the northwest corner of Syria. Perhaps the third largest city in the Roman Empire.
Philippi
Roman military colony on the eastern border of Macedonia.
Thessalonica
Hellenistic city and provincial capital of Macedonia on the north coast of the Thermaikos Gulf.
Athens
Achaian city and cultural center on the south coast of the Attic peninsula.
Corinth
Roman colony and capital of Achaia, located on the west coast of the isthmus connecting the Peloponnese to Attica. A major cosmopolitan and economic center of the empire.
Ephesus
Major Hellenistic city and provincial capital of the province of Asia. Located on the central Mediterranean coast of that province.
Rome
Capital and largest city of the Roman Empire, on the Tiber River in west-central Italy.
