What is an aquatic biome?
A water based biome
E.g. oceans, rivers
What is a terrestrial biome?
Land based biome named after its vegetation
What is GM agriculture?
GM-genetically modified
Agriculture that has been modified to keep away pests, protect from drought, increase yield etc.
What is commercial agriculture?
Farming with intent to sell some or all of the production
What is a staple food?
A food eaten regularly by a community or society as the main part of their diet
What is the key factor determining the type of biome that exists in an area?
Climate
Why are deserts located where they are?
Because it’s hot, rain dries out, making it dry and a desert
Generally deserts are close to the equator
Describe the main features of a grassland
High temperature, dry, 2 seasons- rainy and dry
Large herds of animals, zebras, elephants etc
Dry grass and trees
Characteristics of a rainforest
- humid, lots of water, rain
- 1/2 world’s animals, insects, frogs, sloths
- 1/2 world’s plants, green vegetation
What staple crop does Australia produce the most of?
Wheat
Difference between subsistence and commercial agriculture
Commercial is farming to sell so,e or all of the production, whereas subsistance farming is self sufficient where all production is to feed the person
