GEOGRAPHY Flashcards
Natural Resources.
Raw materials that occur in the environment and are necessary to humans
What is a renewable resource?
A resource which can be replaced over a short period of time
Non Renewable resources
A resource that can only be replaced over many centuries
Two examples of renewable resources
Solar energy and water
Two examples of non renewable resources
Coal and oil
Explain why water is a renewable resource?
Water is a renewable resource as it is constantly being recycled through a water cycle
Name the places water stays the longest?
Antarctic ice sheets,ground water,glaciers,oceans,large rivers.
Provide your own example to show how the water cycle works
For example dinosaurs drank water and urinated it out.The water sinks into the ground and then evaporates into the air as water vapour where it gathers in clouds before cooling and falling to earth as precipitation and then gathers into water places again
What is groundwater?
Water that is found under the earth’s surface.
What does permeable mean?
Permeable means to allow liquids or gasses to pass through it
What is groundwater recharge?
Groundwater recharge is when surface water filters down and refills the aquifer
What is blue water?
Blue water consists of fresh surface water and groundwater .the water in freshwater lakes, rivers, wetlands and aquifers
What is green water?
water that is stored in the soil or that stays on top of the soil or in vegetation
What is run-off?
precipitation not absorbed by soil, and which runs over the land and into streams
What is relative humidity?
the amount of moisture in the air
rainfall variability
the change from year to year in the amount of rainfall in a given location
Evaporation
Water evaporates from soil and water surfaces to form water vapour or water gas. More evaporation occurs near the equator in the open ocean than other locations.
Space
Places on surface of earth latitude and longitude
Place
Places in our world City,suburb,town,
neighbourhood
Interconnection
It explains the relationship between two places or objects.
Change
The concept of change involves both time and space. It is an alteration by either man-made or naturally.
Environment
physical and biological world that provides the necessary resources to support all life on earth.
Sustainability
The ability to sustain the environment to its maximum capacity so that we can keep all life in the long term.
Scale
Scale refers to the relation between the real size of something and its size on a map, model or diagram
Improved drinking water
Water that is safe for human consumption
Water scarcity
a situation that occurs when the demand for water is more than the supply available
Water stress
a situation that occurs in a country with less than 1000 cubic metres of renewable fresh water per person
Name three countries that are water stressed and experience water scarcity
Australia,Eygpt and Morocco
