Prime Meridian
Another name for the Greenwich Meridian
Degree
A measurement of an angle between two lines. Shown by the symbol .
Grid reference
The position of a place whcih is given by naming the lines of latitude and longitude which cross through it.
E.g: the grid reference for Cape Town is 34.S ; 18.E
Co-ordinates
Another name for grid reference
model
an exact copy of an object; a model can be a smaller or larger copy of the original; maps are smaller models of the land
reduced
made smaller
scaled down
Reduced/made smaller while keeping the shape of the original
scale
tells us by how much a model has been reduced or enlarged
enlarged
made bigger
scaled up
enlarged/made bigger, while keeping the shape of the original object
estimate
an approximate amount or number based on someone’s judgement; not exact
line scale
a line that shows how much of the ground is represented by one centimetre on the line and map
word scale
a description of a scale, in word; for example, one centimetre on the map represents twenty kilometres on the ground
straight-line distance
the distance between two places measured in a straight line; a straight-line distance does not, for e.g, follow a winding road
