geog chap 10 Flashcards
what are the three components of a transport system?
network, infrastructure and nodes
why do we need transport systems?
to move people and goods
how do we measure quality of a transport system?
density of transport network, quality of infrastructure and variety of modes
what is a node
a location that provides entry to the transport network(e.g. airports, highways)
what is a route?
the path of travel between nodes
what is a network?
consists of nodes linked by routes
what are some examples of transport infrastructures?
roads, railways, walkways, bridges, bicycle lanes, signages
what are motorised modes of transport, and give an example
motorised modes move along specific routes and stop at specific nodes based on a schedule(e.g. buses, trains)
what are customized point-to-point hire transport services, and give an example
services you hire to bring you from one specific place to another specific place directly(e.g. taxi)
what are examples of major transport nodes and where are they found
terminals and interchanges.
they are found at places with high concentration of activities for high levels of accessibility
why is transport important?
to fulfil the needs of movement around locations
describe unimodal transport
movement is limited(e.g. trains travel between 2 points)
describe multimodal transport
more types of movements than unimodal transport(e.g. trains can travel between 2 points through transiting at different points)
what makes an efficient transport network?
good intermodal connectivity(the seamless movement of passengers and goods using two or more transport nodes)
what is hub-and-spoke connection
people and goods travel between locations by making a transfer at a intermediary location called a hub(e.g. changi airport is a hub)
