Geo TA2 Revision - Weather/Rivers Flashcards
Weather
The short term changes in the atmosphere. These can change within hours or minutes.
Climate
The long-term pattern of weather in an area, usually measured over a period of 30 years.
Describe high pressure.
1) Air descends
2) No clouds
3) Leads to high pressure
If it is a hot sunny day high pressure would be present.
High pressure moves downwards.
Describe low pressure.
1) Air rises
2) Leads to clouds
3) Leads to low pressure
If it is a cloudy day with rain low pressure would be present.
Low pressure moves upwards.
Describe relief rainfall.
-Relief rainfall occurs when warm, moist air from the ocean rise up over mountains
-When the warm air rises, it cools and condenses to form clouds. This brings rain to side of the mountain next to the ocean.
-Once the air has passed over the mountains, it descends and warms.
-This creates drier conditions known as a rain shadow.
Describe convectional rainfall
-When the sun heats the land.
-This creates rising pockets of warm air, known as convection currents.
-When the warm air rises, it cools and condenses to form clouds.
-These clouds can be large cumulonimbus clouds.
-The clouds can produce heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
Describe frontal rainfall.
1) Occurs when a cold front meets a warm front. The heavier colder air sinks to the ground, warm air rises above it.
2) As the warm air rises it begins to cool
3)This air then condenses to form, clouds
4) These clouds bring heavy rain.
Arctic Maritime
-Top
-Brings very/ extremely cold and wet conditions.
Polar Maritime
-Top left
-Brings cold and wet conditions
Polar Continental
-Top right
-Brings cold and dry conditions
Tropical Continental
-Bottom
-Brings warm and dry conditions
Tropical Maritime
-Bottom left
-Brings warm and wet conditions
River from upper-lower course.
Upper course:
-Very slim, narrow and shallow
-Vertical erosion is most dominant
-Where river starts
Middle:
-Gets wider and a bit deeper
-Lateral erosion becomes more common
Lower:
-Gets much deeper, and wider
-Lateral erosion becomes more dominant
Sort landforms into correct river course:
Waterfall: Upper
V shaped valley: Upper
Oxbow Lake: Middle
Meander: Middle
Floodplain: Lower
Levee: Lower
