Geo Exam Study Flashcards
What is Urbanisation?
The increase of people living in towns and cities
What is a push factor? Give three specific examples
Hint : Places are named
- The cost of living (house prices rising in Sydney)
- Overcrowding (Not being able to use public transportation because of too many people in China)
- Pollution (Having to wear a mask to breathe due to air pollution in Beijing)
- War or poverty (Ukraine)
What is a pull factor? Give three specific examples
- Employment Opportunities (Finding a job with a higher income in the city or even a job)
Family / Migration (You have family that reside there and you want to be with them)
Access to services and necessary buildings (better hospitals/healthcare or education)
What is a megacity? Give an example
A megacity is a city that has a population that consists of at least 10 million people. An example being NYC`
Outline two factors which affect/change Australia’s population
- Education Levels impact Australia’s population as a lot of people do come to Sydney for the sole purpose of higher education but a lot of people do also leave to go to schools in other countries such as ivy league schools
- The migration patterns /Diversity change Australia’s population as they make up for a vast majority of the population due to lots of people coming and migrating to this multicultural and safe country
Examples of Megacities (+ effect of being a megacity ) :
Beijing (air pollution), NYC (Underground Trains), Mexico City (Slums
What economic factor influences urbanisation? (How? and Consequence)
High Housing Prices :
Results in more costly and expensive houses. For example houses in Sydney have increased to at least 10 million whereas suburban areas only usually cost around one million. This results in people not being able to afford houses
What social factor influences urbanisation? (How? and Consequence)
Homelessness / Development of slums :
Mexico City has a large development of slums in urban areas due to poverty
What environmental factor influences urbanisation? (How? and Consequence)
Air Pollution / Pollution :
People residing in Beijing have to wear masks going outdoors and cant even open their windows due to the severity of air pollution and power plants being placed right next to housing.
What is a biome?
A biome is a large area characterised by its vegetation, soil, climate and wildlife
What is biodiversity?
Is the range and variation of species and lifeforms you’ll find in a biome
List the 5 major types of biomes
Desert
Forest
Tundra
Grassland
Aquatic
What are the human impacts on biomes? Give two examples
Deforestation : Taking away the natural habitat and removing the homes of wildlife residing there forcing them to relocate as well as exposing soil and removing vegetation
Pollution : Destroys and ruins biomes in many forms and ways for example polluting waterways
Connection between location of biomes and weather patterns?
They connect through the impacts it has on a biome.
