What is it effective against
A
Enterobacter, E. coli, Klebsiella, Citrobacter, Pseudomonas, and Serratia.
some gram-positive bacteria, including some strains of MRSA.

What are the administration alerts
A
- Use only IM and IV solutions that are clear and colorless/slightly yellow.
- Discard discolored solutions or those with particulate matter.
- Withhold the drug if peak serum levels exceed 5-10 mcg/mL.

What are the adverse effects ?
A
Neurotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, neuromuscular blockade and paralysis

What are the early signs of neurotoxicity
A
Ototoxicity, tinnitus, vertigo, persistent headaches.

What are the other neurotoxicity signs
A
Paresthesias, muscle twitching, seizures.

What are the signs of nephrotoxicty
A
Oliguria, proteinuria, elevated BUN and creatinine levels.

When is gentomycin used
A
serious urinary, respiratory, nervous, or GI infections when less toxic antibiotics are contraindicated
